Congratulations to CAAC Book Award Recipients!

Hamilton2.jpgCongratulations to the recipients of the 2017 CAAC Book Award, an achievement award presented to selected outstanding high school students who display “excellence in academic scholarship, high character, and the accomplishment of many worthy achievements.” This year's recipients received Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Chernow's landmark biography of Founding Father (and Columbia Alum!) Alexander Hamilton.

 

Sophie Behdani
Myers Park High School

Sophie Behdani is a student in the Myers Park IB Diploma Program and is always a hardworking and conscientious student. Sophie provides volunteer service throughout the community and is also involved with student groups here on campus. She will represent Myers Park at Project Uplift at the University of North Carolina this summer.

 

Beryl Bortey
Providence High School

Beryl Bortey is most deserving of the Columbia Book Award for her leadership and dedication in both the classroom and the community. Beryl is currently ranked in the top one percent of the class and is taking a rigorous schedule that includes five AP classes. She serves as the vice president for French Club, Key Club, and National Technical Honor Society as well as the secretary for the Sophomore Class Board. Beryl’s passion for learning extends beyond the classroom, and she has served the last two summers as an intern for Promising Pages, a local non-profit that provides books and reading programs to underprivileged students.  In addition, Beryl is a part of the Leaders in Training Program through Camp Soar and assists with their camp for special needs children during the summer. 

 

Kelsie King
Hickory Ridge High School

Uniquely integrating compassion and sincere commitment with a maturity of approach to work and responsibility, Kelsie King has undeniably embodied the definition of leadership. Kelsie currently serves as Student Body President of Hickory Ridge High, as well as Co-President of her Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter. In addition to heading Student Council and HOSA, she has maintained her rank in the top five percent of her class, and continues to challenge herself in courses of Advanced Placement. Kelsie has also made an impact in the field of public health through her work with the Cabarrus Health Alliance. Taking Responsible Actions In Life (TRAIL) is a program of the Cabarrus Health Alliance that fosters awareness of sexual, mental, and emotional health within the high schools of Cabarrus County. Due to her academic achievement and her portrayal of leadership during her high school years, Kelsie will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain scholar.

 

Kathryn Ward
Central Cabarrus High School

Kathryn Ward has consistently been in the top 5% of her class, and has challenged herself with 7 AP classes, as well being a part of a rigorous STEM program. She has been debate captain for 2 years, art club president, and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and Beta Club. Outside of school she spends a large percentage of time volunteering through Youth council, a community outreach program, working with Concord’s Downtown Development Corporation, and working as an assistant summer camp director at Sundae Art Gallery. Kathryn is excited to spend her last summer before college acting as an intern for Concord’s Downtown Development Corporation, a non-profit that works to maintain downtown Concord and put on community centered events.
